Digging Deeper Introduction

This Digging Deeper study is for anyone who wants to explore the Bible--God's instruction book for life. It will be a journey designed to help us become followers of Christ and to respond to his voice as he speaks to us from his Word. Rabbi Jesus called his followers disciples--people who wanted to copy his life and teaching. He said to his disciples, "If you continue in my Word, then you are my disciples indeed; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:31-32).

Many of us don't enjoy true freedom and joy because we do not follow God's truth--his eternal principles for an abundant life. We have not developed the ability to discern God's truth from Satan's lies. So, we carry the marks of sin and the consequences of poor choices, leaving many with a load of hurt, disappointment and regret. God has not guaranteed his followers a hedge of protection from pain, but he has promised that we need not carry our burden alone He longs to walk by our side as a dear friend, bringing peace as we learn his new ways to think, feel, and act. Ultimately, however, he longs for us not to be content with what this life offers, but to live for a new life in that glorious home prepared of us, his beloved children. A greatest apologist of our time, C. S. Lewis describes our present dilemma like this:

"At present we are on the outside of the world, the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with that splendor we see. But all the leaves of the New Testament are rustling with the rumor that it will not always be so. Some day, God willing, we shall get in." The Weight of Glory

This is your opportunity to 'rustle the leaves' of God's book and to see what he has to say to our age and to taste the hope and joy for the future. If you have never before studied the Bible seriously, you will find this a new and stimulating journey. First, you will learn to listen to God's voice as he speaks to you through daily quiet time spent in Bible reading, meditation and prayer. As the roots of a tree draw life-giving nourishment, you also will learn to tap into God's power through a four-step process called "TAAP," a devotional Bible study method.

Getting Started

1. Begin by reading "How to Have a Meaningful Quiet Time," (pp. 231-254) in Rick Warren's Bible Study Methods: Twelve Ways You Can Unlock God's Word, by Rick Warren.

2. Set aside a minimum of 15-20 minutes daily for Bible reading, meditation, and prayer as you 'tap' into God's power through your devotional TAAP.

3. Open your Bible with an attitude of expectant joy in the discovery of fresh new insights as you daily meditate on God's truth, goodness, and power.

4. Make it your primary goal to get to know Jesus better and to become more like him, rather than to make this into a doctrinal study.
